Feast with the beasts
We had a great time last night with our friends picnicking under the evening skies with a live blues band and wild animals all around us. (in cages, of course). I was telling my friend: there’s something missing from the experience when you see a lion and don’t fear for your life. That fear is part of the awe that can never be truly experienced in a zoo. Ponderations.

First day back
We teachers reported back to school today. This teacher has had a pretty hard time staying awake, having got up – and stayed up – at/since 6:40am. At least I got to go home and have lunch with Les and beat her in chess for the first time in five hundred years! Here’s the pic I’ve been showing people all day:

In summary
It was an overall awesome trip. Last night was the highlight as Leslie and I got to go on our first date since Freeman was born and immediately saw how important those times would be. Here’s some more pics of our picnic and the ensuing walk.

Picnic by the river
After a relaxing morning watching hawks ride thermals from the cliffs adjacent to our campsite, we struck out for town and found a beautiful park at which to eat our KFC.

Day 3
This morning was great. Dan and I got up “early” and went on a hike near the San Juan National Forest, which turned out to be right up the road from our campsite. The campsite’s been great, by the way, complete with wireless. I’m reclining on the front porch right now as we speak, in fact. Anyway, we found a trail and it was pretty wet from the night before, not to mention the general dampness in the air in Colorado during monsoon season. As soon as we got hot enough to take our jackets off, we did so. And as soon as we had done that, it started to rain. So, we donned our jackets and set out for adventure. We decided to summit a nearby peak but got distracted by the sound of rushing water. Thirty minutes later, completely soaked through, we found the culprit: a seasonal mudfall. It was still quite and adventure getting out there off the trail and through the scrub oak. My iphone’s gps was very reassuring but complete unnecessary as we navigated by the larger landmarks like peaks and saddles and valleys. We got back and through all our clothes in the washer and our bodies in the showers. Good times. After that the H clan headed home and then we ate at a nice French cafe with the folks and then drove to vallecito lake. Good times. At the french cafe they made me a nice experimental latte – since they don’t usually do decaf – and I enjoyed a napoleon as the rain fell outside. I savored it in the spirit of grandpa S.
